Epsom RDA are delighted to have received a donation for £5,000 from the Fiona Strong Memorial Fund which has helped them buy a new horse, Hugo.
Fiona Strong, a former Epsom RDA volunteer, sadly died in 2018 at the age of 31 from Rhabdomyosarcoma Cancer. The Fiona Strong Memorial Fund was formed with the aim of supporting young people with disabilities or suffering from life shortening illnesses.
Fiona’s father, Clive Strong, said “Fiona was a local girl from Ashtead who in her teens enjoyed two years volunteering at Epsom RDA. It seems fitting that we have been able to help the charity who provide wonderful opportunities for disabled people.”
The donation was presented to Epsom RDA Chair, Ray Lee, who was accompanied by the new RDA horse, Hugo. Ray said “We are grateful to the Fiona Strong Memorial Fund for their donation. One of the biggest challenges we face is finding the special horses who can help our disabled riders. They are much sought after and almost as rare as unicorns! Having the funds available meant that when we had the opportunity to buy Hugo we were able to make a decision quickly and secure him for Epsom RDA. We are now working with Hugo to help him learn his new job. I am pleased to say he is settling in well and with his inquisitive friendly nature he is quickly becoming a favourite with our volunteers.”
