Starting at 8:30am on the gallops visitor’s listened with interest to ITV Racing presenter Rishi Persad as he interviewed the trainers regarding their yards and horse to look out for. While in the background several horses from the yards trained on the all weather gallops.
At 9:30am the yards of local trainers Adam West, James Boyle, Mark Pattinson, Michael Attwater, Pat Phelan, Roger Ingram and Simon Dow where opened to the public. Entrance for the day was just £10 per adult under 18’s were FREE all process going to Racing Welfare
By now the heat was building so luckily no need to walk or drive between the yards as buses were laid on to reduce the congestion in the yards and the surrounding roads.
At the yards the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable and always happy to answer any questions. Visitors where allowed to stroke the horses but there where some warning signs telling visitors that ” These horses bite” but this didn’t put people off. Not only where Racing Welfare supported at Simon Dow’s yard Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare where there raising awareness of Greyhound adoption. By 12pm it was time to move over to the racecourse Adventure Family Fun Day.
By now the temperature was over 30°c but that didn’t stop families turning up for a fun day which included face painters, crocodile encounters, pony rides, a climbing wall, bouncy castle, colouring wall, high rope assault course, golf simulator, trampoline bungees and of course horse racing.
The first race of the day was the Space Hopper Stakes contested by the local stables and staff from the racecourse. As always a great event to start the day and this year there was drama on the finishing line. Make sure you watch the video to see who wins.
TV Presenter Clare Balding OBE, who is also on the committee at the racecourse was signing her new book “The Racehorse Who Learned to Dance” Despite the heat Clare sat out in the blazing sun and chatted to her fans and poised for photos.
All in all a long hot day but plenty of fun for everyone. I know I slept well.
