Meet a wartime couple and learn why they rationed food in WW2 and what it was like to queue for hours. Find how important your ration books were – if you didn’t have one, you got no food.
Sugar, meat, fats, bacon and cheese were rationed by coupon and other foods such as tinned goods, dried fruit, cereals and biscuits were rationed by a points system, where the number of points changed according to availability and demand. People queued for hours only to find they had sold out or even queued to find out what was on sale, but a queue was always good for a chat. There were no supermarkets so people queued at many shops – the butcher, greengrocer or baker. Because clothes too were rationed. Many people had to make do and mend.
