The 16th Omni Terrier Derby

The Omni Terrier Derby has grown in popularity with dog owners and spectators over the past 15 years. An unmissable slice of nonsense that also raises an ever increasing amount for charities.

Big crowd as normal

The Terrier Derby is run alongside the actual Derby course on Epsom Downs and is open to any terrier no taller than 15” at the shoulder. As well as the racing there was Fun Dog Show as well as refreshments for man and beast. As I said earlier the day is also a fund raising event for he Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, The Injured Jockey’s Fund and canine charities. With just a £2 entry fee per dog and a raffle.

The heat on the day did cause concerns but plenty of water baths around and a dip at the end of the race where put in place. As well as reduction in the number of races  for the dogs health and safety.

Time for a cool down

After just 12 heats and 4 quarter finials we were down to the last 4 dogs.  And what a race it was won by several lengths by the impressive Jasper owned by Davina Chambers. Local race horse trainer Simon Dow was on hand to present the winners with their cup and rosette.

Well Done to the organisers of the Terrier Derby. It was a touch and go if the event was going to take place in the heat and every measure possible was put in place for the dogs safety and health. As normal everyone including the dogs enjoyed the day and local charities benefited from the racing and the raffle.
